27/03/2007 - Kerygma and Aloysians Red make it through to semifinals

The first round of the men’s and ladies playoffs have come to an end with semi finals scheduled to be played next weekend. In the men’s league Aloysians Reds and Kerygma won against Marsascala and Aloysians Whites respectively while in the ladies league, champions Paola Hibs Candy meet X-Sel and Playvolley Blue will face Flyers in next weekend’s fixtures. In the under 18 league, Paola Hibs face Flyers next Saturday at 11:30 in a match that promises to be a close one. Flyers are favorites to win this final but Paola Hibs cannot be underestimated after managing to reach the finals.

The under 15 playoffs are also set to take place next weekend with the first round played on the 31st March. Paola A, having finished in first place have their place guaranteed in the semi finals. Flyers A meet Flyers B, Paola B play against Playvolley Blacks and X-Sel face Kerygma. Semi finals will be played on Sunday with Paola A favorite to win this category.

In the ladies playoffs, David Bonnici’s Paola Hibs meet X-Sel both in a best out of three fixture while Playvolley Blue face Steve Farrugia’s consistent Flyers. In the men’s league, Lipton Aloysians meet Aloysians Reds and Kerygma, who have strengthened their play with the return of David Galea face Fleur de Lys.

In the ladies senior league Paola Hibs Candy produced a good performance against second placed Playvolley Blue. Hibs started well and powered their way to a 25-11 win. Playvolley Blue simply could not react to Hibs powerful attacks. Alison Borg Hayman and Elaine Caruana both had a good match for Hibs, the latter being crucial in defense. The second set was no different with Hibs keeping up the pace. Playvolley simply could not rise to the level of play imposed by the Paolites even though Playvolley coach Alan Gauci did all in his power to motivate his players. Setter Celaine Muscat had a good match for Playvolley and gave her team mates excellent attacking opportunities, which most of the time were not converted into points due to Hibs good plays. The third set was a bit closer and Playvolley even lead 23-22. Through a number of consecutive powerful services by Elaine Caruana, and with the final spike by Gertrude Zarb, Hibs were able to win the set 25-23 and end the game 3-0.
