Beachvolley Season Begins
A number of Beach Volley tournaments will be held on Malta’s various beaches this coming summer. Last Sunday (24th June) the first of a series of two tournaments sponsored by Kinnie Zest was held at Golden Bay with a good number of teams registering for this event. This men’s tournament was won by duo Ron Stivala and Paul Vella after they beat David Galea and Marco Muratori in the finals. Another tournament, this time for mixed teams will be held on the 29th June. For more information, please contact the Malta Volleyball Association on info@maltavolleyball.org
Playvolley in Italy training camp
Aloysians PlayVolley will continue with their commitment in the twinning Project with Italian Top clubs, mainly Volley Bergamo. Also involved is Gruppo Atlantide, a marketing agency for Italian Serie A and B teams as well as individual stars.
This months trip will involve two teams that will be travelling to Valle D’Aosta, Italy The trip will be spread over 10 days in which the first part will serve as a training camp where the Maltese players will train twice a day under Italian coaches and also get the opportunity to meet well known Italian national team players. Towards the end of the trip, the Maltese teams will take part in a European tournament.
This Project has been going on for the past 7 years. It has helped the club to strengthen itself in the local volleyball scene as well as establish itself in Italy. Gruppo Atlantide visited Malta twice over this period to help identify potential Maltese volleyball talents as well as to give PlayVolley coaches training to help them upgrade the squads level of play. They have also helped in providing volleyball material and equipment.

Maltese Referees gain International status
Two local volleyball referees, Mr. Frankie Tanti and Mr. Nello Calleja, have been awarded full International status by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) after the completion of the requested number of international matches they had to officiate to be given this status. After attending the International Refereeing Candidate Course in Cecina, Italy, in April 2003, both referees had five years during which they had to officiate as first referees in seven international matches, after which, and according to the performances given, they were awarded full International status.
Both Mr. Tanti and Mr. Calleja have been reffing in the local leagues for a considerable number of years, and after obtaining the status as National referees in 1998, they became International Candidates in 2003. Internationally, they have already officiated in a number of competitions ranging from Club competitions to qualifying tournaments of Junior and Youth European Championships. A third referee, Mr. Marvic Micallef, is currently going through the phase that will lead him to obtain full International status in the near future. The Malta Volleyball Association will be aiming to reach the full complement of five international referees in the forthcoming years.
