All of the local leagues here have taken a three-week break for the holidays. Here is a summary of all of our competitions.

Super Cup

Swieqi Phoenix Nium won the first trophy of the 2023–2024 volleyball season with a close victory over Falcons Volleyball Club in a match that was evenly matched and entertaining. Falcons controlled set one, earning a 7-0 point run to start the game. Phoenix mounted a comeback, but the Falcons maintained their lead and won the first set 25–18. In the second set, the majority of the play featured nearly point-for-point action between the two teams. Falcons maintained concentration on their objective and won this set 25–21, securing a major 2-0 lead in the game. Phoenix got off to a more powerful start than the Falcons in the third and fourth sets, winning both 25-21 and tying the match at two sets apiece. Swieqi Phoenix Nium kept their momentum into the fifth set, taking an 11-4 lead. They managed to withstand the Falcons’ valiant comeback and win the set 15–12 to win the 2023 Super Cup.

Super League

Falcons and Swieqi Phoenix squared off in a rematch of this year’s Super Cup during the first weekend of the Super League. Phoenix prevailed in this match 3-1. Meanwhile, Flyers defeated Paola Executive Services 3-1 to record their first victory. The Falcons would respond the next weekend, defeating Birkirkara VC 3-0 to earn their first campaign victory.

The league’s first round of play has featured some really close games. For example, Flyers defeating Falcons Volleyball Club 3-2 after trailing 2-1. Additionally, Birkirkara Volleyball Club overcame a 2-0 deficit to win the match 3-2 in a hard-fought victory over Paola Executive Services. Here’s a peek at the current Super League Table. After taking an early lead, Swieqi Phoenix Nium now leads by 14 points. With 9 points, Flyers is in second place, and Falcons Volleyball Club is in third place with 7 points.

Super League Table

First Division

After the first part of matches in this season’s First Division League, Mgarr Volleyball Club find themselves on top of the table undefeated, dropping a single set in their first four matches. Picking up wins versus Swieqi Phoenix EY, BKVC Reds, Depiro and BKVC Yellows.

Swieqi Phoenix EY and BKVC Yellows are both joint for second place, both on 10 points. Having faced each other earlier on in the season in an intense battle, ending in a 3-2 victory for BKVC Yellows. In other matches in this category Depiro won their opening match in this category versus Paola Executive Services in a 5 set thriller. As both teams currently joint for 4th place in the category on 5 points each. Here’s a look at the table below.

Juniors Under – 19

The defending champions, Swieqi Phoenix Tough Cookies, have won their first four games to start the Under-19 competition unbeaten. With six points, Paola Maypole is in second place, followed by the BKVC Vixens. Take a look at the Table down below.

Under – 19 Table

Juniors Under – 17

Depiro, who defeated last year’s champions 3-0, have clinched the top spot in the Under-17 division by winning all seven of their first-round games. In this category, the league will split into two phases following the first round of games: the teams ranked 1–5 will fight for the championship, and the teams ranked 6–9 will fight for the second group titles.

National Cup

This month, the National Cup draw was made, and there are still some intriguing games to be played. The competition’s quarterfinals get underway on January 13 and pit Paola Executive Services against Depiro, who will face the victor of Swieqi Phoenix versus Flyers. The winner of the match between Falcons Volleyball Club and Mgarr Volleyball Club will face Birkirkara in the semifinals.
